A Day in the Life of a Virtual Receptionist

A Day in the Life of a Virtual Receptionist

As we all know, the pandemic brought the era of remote work into full swing. While it has its benefits, it also comes with its fair share of hilarious mishaps and unexpected surprises. As professionals, we’ve all had those moments where our work-from-home setup has led to some truly unforgettable experiences.

One time, during a video call with a client, my son accidentally showed up in his pajamas, much to their amusement. Another time, I accidentally left my microphone unmuted and unknowingly serenaded my team with a tuneless rendition of “Happy Birthday” as I indulged in some off-key karaoke during a break. And who can forget the time my cat decided to join my video call, taking over the screen and stealing the spotlight?

But it’s not just the wardrobe and pet appearances that have kept us entertained. The struggles with technology have also led to some epic failures. From accidentally sharing the wrong screen during a presentation to unknowingly broadcasting our embarrassing desktop backgrounds to everyone on the call, we’ve all had our fair share of tech mishaps that left us in fits of laughter.

Despite the challenges, these funny moments have helped us find humour in the midst of the chaos and build camaraderie with our colleagues. It’s these shared experiences that have made remote work feel a little less isolating and a lot more enjoyable.

So, to all my fellow remote workers out there, let’s raise a virtual toast to the Work from home community! May we continue to embrace the unpredictability of remote work and find joy in the funny fails and funnies that come along with it.

What is a typical day for a virtual receptionist?

The evolution of the internet has increased the demand for virtual receptionists exponentially. Even though we work from our own home office, a virtual receptionist has a typical day-to-day schedule. Many virtual receptionists have children or other daily obligations so working flexible hours is convenient for us. More than 35% of the workforce is comprised of millennials, and over half of job seekers who are millennials said that an option to work remotely would greatly increase their interest in particular employers.

Skills of a Virtual Receptionist

Some people believe that you don’t need any qualifications to become a virtual receptionist, but that simply isn’t true. There are many skills needed to perform the job duties required, such as:

  • Strong communication
  • Writing proficiency
  • Management experience
  • Comprehension of billing and invoicing
  • Exceptional typing

Virtual receptionists are also responsible for maintaining a quiet, organized workspace, and purchasing our own equipment.

Starting the Workday

Most virtual receptionists start our day bright and early. To prepare for the day, we check our calendar for daily tasks, follow-ups, and leads. The day-to-day tasks a virtual receptionist can expect are:

  • Receiving incoming calls
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Checking on social media
  • Attending business meetings over phone or video call

Depending on the business, we might also assist with billing and invoicing, technical troubleshooting, and dispatching.

Productivity and Working Remotely

A recent study shows that people working remotely felt 24% happier and more productive. On top of increased happiness and productivity, people enjoy working remotely due to comfort, flexible hours, the ability to focus on results, and an 82% decrease in stress levels. Even employers have noticed a 25% decrease in turnover when offering employees to work remotely. No wonder why the demand for virtual receptionists is skyrocketing!
